An Afternoon in Keralgerie Park

Well finally the weather gods smiled and our Picnic in the Park went ahead on a sunny Autumn afternoon.

The Park was in good shape, and the people came to this growing community event. Great to see so many families with young children enjoying themselves. Plenty of babies, and dogs, all behaving themselves. Also it was an affordable afternoon. All activities were free, the food and drinks free. Although a donation was optional, most people gave something.

The jumping castle was a big hit and was kept busy all afternoon. Kids, and a few adults were able to play cricket and tennis. For the younger ones there was a drawing table and coloring in activities.

Anything associated with the police was a magnet to the kids: the speed guns, the cars, the sirens, flashing lights and handcuffs. The patience of the police officers was laudable. Measuring how fast you can throw a softball was a great contest.

The Rotary Club of Balmoral brought their BBQ trailer and ran a sausage sizzle and drinks stall. Apart from manning the stand the Club also made a generous donation to our designated charity.

There was an information booth and packs on Neighbourhood Watch and other community events. Local Cr Shayne Sutton (and NHW member) spoke about upgrades to Keralgerie Park with new playground equipment and gave residents a chance to offer their opinions.

Apart from being an event where neighbours can get together and engage with the community, it also had a serious side. We sponsored a local welfare agency, the Cannon Hill Family Support Centre, who provide emergency relief services to families in need through many suburbs in our region. We raised around $1,060 through various raffles with a range of prizes, small and large, donated by sponsors. Ultimately though it was the generosity of the community that counted. We will present a cheque at our next NHW meeting.

We gratefully acknowledge Cr Shayne Sutton's assistance in the funding through the Lord Mayors Suburban Initiative Fund on behalf of the Brisbane City Council. Speaking of sponsors we had generous support from our major sponsors Adbri Masonry with over $1,000 worth of landscaping and  Bunnings Cannon Hill donated a 4 burner BBQ. Other sponsors include Molloy Road Friendly Grocer, Blue Poppy Coffee Shop, Mama Ferrari's Pizza, Kimberly Clark, Cr Shayne Sutton, Aaron Dillaway MP, Kevin Rudd MP, Woolworths Morningside, Furrykids at Home, Richmond Road Dental, Direct Hire Tingalpa, Hampton Swim School, Scandi Kids.
