Morningside divsion for the past weekend. The orange B is a break and enter into a residence. The yellow S is a steal from vehicle offence

There was a spike in property offences in Morningside division this weekend. A number of cars were broken into during overnight offences. One of the vehicles was left unlocked with an iPod left inside. Easy pickings for an opportunistic offender and also a strong motivator to continue looking for targets. The other vehicles had windows smashed to gain entry and two of those had wallets left in them. This is a major inconvenience for the victim in terms of vehicle damage and the additional pain of cancelling credit cards, getting a new licence and medicare card. Whilst police have adjusted their patrol activity and are undertaking proactive measures to reduce crime, residents and vehicle owners are reminded that offenders do look for opportunties to benefit from our bad habits.

Please DO NOT leave ANY items of value on display in your vehicle. Offenders do not think twice about smashing a window to get loose change, let alone wallets, iPods, iPhones, GPS units and anything else. In addition, if they get great rewards from their actions, they will continue to target the area. DO NOT leave spare keys, garage remotes, or fobs in your car. They provide access to your house or property.
There were also some houses targeted over the weekend. The offences occurred around midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. In most cases the offender did not have to force entry to the house. Computers, jewellery, phones and car keys were targeted. An offender was also disturbed at one address. Described as 173cm tall and caucasian wearing a black hoodie and light shorts, the offender ran from the scene. Investigations and forensic tests are continuing in hope of identifying him. Car keys stolen in a Friday night break and enter were used on Sunday to unlock the victim’s car and steal additional property.
Police are asking residents to be vigilant of activity in your local area.
